Looking at the current crop of reality shows, would you say it is about time to shelve the format, haven't people had enough of Britain Got Talent, X Factor, The Voice... or do we still love the underdog and cheer on our favourite contestant, only to find they have been eliminated, or maybe plucked from obscurity.... yeah right, or should we have voted or not; I just can't decide.

I think most people are aware of the manipulation of this TV format which has been running for many years now, but we still can't resist the temptation of watching, with our friends over a beer and moaning about the show. Why do we moan, well I think there are several reason's for this.

If you have a good understanding on how the ''entertainment'' industry works, then you have a good head start, the contestant who was picked from working in Tesco's, Post Office etc, and put on a stage to grace millions of people will have the opportunity to capture the audience, but very few of these people have worked hard, been professionally trained, trodden the boards, worked for little or no money... so on and so on, if you like not done their apprenticeships necessarly, so I can understand when a lot of people feel very frustrated and aggrieved.

But on the other hand the person who has put themselves forward for public humiliation or adoration, could be on a very naive road, you see all they wish to do is just become FAMOUS without all the hard work, you could say in time they will get there just deserves, probably about 12/18 months if they are lucky to earn some money and fade into obscurity... and look like who some was famous for a while....

I think we all have different views and thoughts on this area, know one is right or wrong, just all have an opinion which is cool. I think the sad point is people to think the road is paved with gold, only to find the road has dried up and the agent has move on to the next big thing. If you look back in time to the great Hollywood era of the 50's, this was a magical time when stars were stars, and that sprinkling of magical dust, you couldn't see, but you knew it was there true performers, stars, celebrities were born, nurtured and developed.... I suppose the world moves on, but I do think celebrity status should be for the very few, and NOT the masses, just a thought !!

http://prbmediaglobal.com

Follow us on Twitter: @prbmedia

How to succeed in the Music Business..... Trying really hard..

It's never been easy to make a living as a musician. But there was always a dream: to become a star on the strength of your talent and your music. The Internet is a rude sandman, however, and today that dream is a lot more convoluted. No longer can a would-be rock star follow the once-accepted checklist:

(1) Sign with a big label

(2) Get a hit

(3) Buy mansions and cars

The number of ways a musician can make money is now varied. The question, for many musicians still trying to make a go of it in the industry, is whether those many sources can add up to something sustainable. We all know the single is used to be a lost leader for the albums release, so the band or artist would go on the road to perform LIVE shows (festivals) and sell there merchandising to earn a crust, this is an area now most labels want a slice off it's called the '360 deal' and becoming more popular. I would still say the two of the most attractive income streams are PUBLISHING & SYNC placements for Film, TV, Ads & Games, I wouldn't say this is the gravy train but the band / artist can create some great income streams from these area's.

In 2010, the Future of Music Coalition, a nonprofit group that advocates for musicians, decided to survey more than 5,000 musicians to find out the answer to that question. The Study, which is ongoing, has found 42 different sources of revenue for musicians.

Fifty-six percent of respondents felt the Internet made it possible for them to manage their own career. Sixty-four percent said it also made the music world more competitive by creating "an overwhelming amount of music that consumers are now also bombarded by," says Jean Cook, one of the study's authors. At this year's South by Southwest music conference, speaking with many young musicians who are navigating the new reality of the music industry. And as the Future of Music Coalition's report suggests, many musicians are questioning the entire checklist, starting with the very benefit of a major record label.

Add licensing of the group's songs to movies, TV shows and commercials to that list, says Rich. Japandroids, young duo, put out their music via a label — the group's sophomore album, Celebration Rock, comes out on Polyvinyl Records in June — but drummer David Prowse says selling music is nowhere near the top of their list of priorities."It is pretty funny, 'cause a guy from our record label is standing right beside me and he probably doesn't want to hear this, but we don't really care whether we sell records, you know? We just want people to hear the record," Prowse says.

The Internet has done the job of exposing Japandroids to a wide audience — just a few days before it arrived in Austin to play at SXSW, the band played multiple shows in Brazil. "We're definitely living our dream. I mean, we're incredibly lucky to get to do what we do."As a duo, Japandroids can keep touring costs relatively low. But living the dream still requires some sacrifices."I spent a lot of last year selling my belongings on Craigslist to pay the rent, eat and buy groceries and get by so that I could just keep playing in the band," says Japandroids guitarist Brian King.

"You do what you have to do."Doing what you have to do, for many artists, means spending a lot more effort promoting yourself. That's something labels used to do. But 37 percent of the musicians surveyed by the Future of Music Coalition said that they were spending more time doing promotion and less time making music.

"One question that the Future of Music Coalition study hasn't been able to answer is whether musicians are better off today than they were when the path within the industry was easier to navigate. That's partly because there weren't any studies of how musicians were doing back then. Today, musicians call their own shots, but they've got to make all the decisions, too."You have the ability to retain all of your rights, if you want to," says the coalition's Casey Rae Hunter. "You have the ability to exploit those rights in a way that works best for you.

I also think a lot of musicians / artists still want it all on a plate, sign the BIG deal... and LIVE like a Rock Star, the business has changed over the last 10 years, so you have to change with it... the song is still the key for obvious reasons but unfortunately with the sale of HMV and being more difficult to buy music from the high street, we are all having to think out the box and be more creative about our approach.

http://prbmediaglobal.com

Follow us on Twitter: @prbmedia

BEX - FROM STAGE TO STUDIO

I love finding new music; stumbling upon an artist you have never heard before, and instantly falling in love with their sound is a great joy, and BeX is one of those musicians, someone with a genuine talent making their way in the music industry.

From dance classes at the age of three to studying at the Stella Mann College of Performing Arts at sixteen, BeX has always been headed for a career in the spotlight, and since graduating back in 2004, she has trodden the boards at some impressive venues, including The Royal Albert Hall and Her Majesty's Theatre; working for the likes ADNEC (Abu Dhabi) and SKY 1 has given BeX the grounding needed to hone the powerful vocal talent she has been blessed with. Match this up with a great passion for song-writing with expressive creative lyrics and catchy tunes, its safe to say that BeX has great things ahead of her. So I was really happy to meet up with BeX just prior to the release of her first EP, having a great opportunity to sit and chat about the recording process, BeX's music and chew the cud in general!

To read more about the latest BeX interview with Razberry Juice.com click on the link below and find out more about this talented singer songwriter.

http://www.razberryjuice.com/index.php/entertainment/378-bex-from-stage-to-studio.html

BeX track - 'Show you (what I'm Made of' Listen & download from CD baby

http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bex3/from/viglink

http://officialbex.com

For more information on BeX contact:

www.prbmediaglobal.com

Follow us on Twitter: @prbmedia

some years, how and why have you made the transition to solo artist, it is
certainly a brave move''

BeX - ''I guess it is a brave
move, but I mainly made the decision because of my great passion to be
songwriter and to be an artist in my own right''.

''I wanted to to create a career
path that would hopefully become a lot more steady. The world of Musical Theatre can be hard, as traveling and living out of a suit case and doing
jobs and auditions here and there to pay the bills. I did have an amazing time in the Musical
Theatre world and I worked on some brilliant shows around the world with some
great people and built up a wealth of experience, but I guess doing 3 months to
1 year contracts at a time can become draining and difficult as you never know
where you're going to be until the next job''

''With the years of experience behind
me as dancer, singer and actress I am able to crossover to the music industry
and hope to build a solid career and a singer songwriter with the help, support
from my family and guidance from my music manager''.

Always great to catch up with BeX.
About Music Supervision - The Holy Grail? (Tips from a Gatekeeper)

As revenues for the sale of recorded music are falling, it is becoming increasingly necessary for independent rights holders (labels, publishers and artists) to seek out alternative revenue/income streams. It is the area of Synch licensing that is presenting considerable opportunities, BUT, and it’s a massive BUT,income from Synch licensing is not the Holy Grail or is it? Great quality music will besought out by music supervisors and key decision makers all the time.

There are key areas of Synch licensing, which include; Advertising, TV, Film, Computer games and the emerging market of corporate communications (corporate videos, Intranets etc). Below is more information about Music Supervision and how the artist / band can gain great exposure and build strong long term relationships.

Do's & Dont's

1) Be
educated about the business side: I know it sounds painful. But on
the most basic level you have to understand (artists & bands) that their are two sides to a song
(master and publishing), what elements are in a license, that samples from
other songs always need to be licensed and cleared.

2)
Know who owns your music: Or at least who has the right to license it for
film and TV. If there are three or two writers, would a supervisor need to get
permission from all three or is there a point person with the power to make
those decisions on behalf of the group? Who owns the master recording of
a song (s) – the producer, the artist or the label? Generally if you have a
label, the label owns it, but basically just make sure you have these conversations
with your team, artist or band covered.

3)
Make smart connections: If I were an independent artist I would not cold
call a big studio pitching my music or would you?. Studios and other big companies get
so many calls and emails everyday it’s way too easy to get lost,
not to mention there are other political agendas and relationships at play as
well. I recommend first targeting representation by pitching companies
who have a strong catalog that your music would fit in well with, and
more importantly – already have connections with all the people who are placing
music. There are big ones like Music Dealers, who have huge searchable databases,
and more boutique companies like Position Music (they have a big production
music library, but a much smaller artist representation wing). How to get representation by one of these
companies (and deciding which company is right for you).

4) Do
your research: If you do insist on cold calling a large company, make sure
you know what projects they’re working on this is a very important area. With this great invention
called the Internet, you can find out almost everything about a production, these days.Take a moment and think, “does my music really fit into anything
they’re working on?” if the answer is yes, mention that. If not,
then be clear that you are aware it may not work right now, but you’d like to
be considered for the future. I don’t know any music supervisor who doesn’t
appreciate when artists and band show they’ve put in a little effort.

5) Always be polite and professional: If you’ve never met or built any rapport with
someone, don’t be their best friend right away, this does NOT work, I’m not saying you have
to call me “Mr. ...,” but use real words, complete sentences and proper
punctuation. I seriously get emails from producers, artist & bands being like,
“Hi. I want to put music into your soundtracks. Let me know what
you’re working on. Thx.” Come on now, lets put more effort in there are NO easy rides in the music business.

6)
Always include music to download: And try to avoid links that expire. I personally download pretty much everything I get sent, right away, and
just store zip files in a folder until I can listen, but I’ve heard other
supervisors express the “no links that expire” sentiment. On the whole,
the more information about a band and artist the better; a YouTube video, or an article
including a stream is good.. SoundCloud is also a good tool, but it can be a pain to
download all the tracks individually. I’m always on the hunt for better
tools to upload and share music.

7) Have
high quality versions, instrumentals and lyrics for all of your tracks on the
ready: I think some people would go so far as to say having stems available
is also important, but in my job we rarely need stems. High (or
“broadcast”) quality files can be WAV of AIF and are necessary for the final
mix.

8)
Always include contact information embedded into your tracks: (or stuck onto
your CD case for physical CDs, or both). Often times I end up listening
to a file months after it was sent to me, and can’t remember where I got it
from. If I can’t figure out where it came from, I don’t know who to reach
out to should I want to license it, and since music searches generally have a
quick turnaround, I may move on to another track.

9) Be
quick about it: As I said above, music searches can require a quick
turnaround. In fact, most of them do. If you have a label,
publisher, administrator or anyone responsible for pitching your music it’s
their job to act quickly, but if you don’t and you get a call about a potential
opportunity – move fast! Sometimes even waiting five, four hours before
responding can cost you a placement.

10)
Patience is a virtue: Sometimes I get asked to give my feedback or opinions
on music I’m sent, and I honestly don’t know what to say. From where I
sit, I only really feel qualified to comment on whether the song or artist is a
fit for any of the projects I have a hand in at that moment, not how good or
bad they are. That’s what bloggers are for. I tell people on the
phone all the time, “if you don’t hear from us, it doesn’t mean that we
don’t like your music or it’s bad – we just don’t have the right project
for it right now.” In my experience, pitching for film and television is
like trying to hit a moving target. I do not envy (and highly respect)
anyone who does it. As they say, “success is when opportunity meets

Music Manager what do they do....

Talent & Music Manager

A talent manager, also known as an artist manager or band manager,
is an individual or company who guides the professional career of
artists in the entertainment industry. The responsibility of the talent
manager is to oversee the day-to-day business
affairs of an artist; advise and counsel talent concerning professional
matters, long-term plans and personal decisions which may affect their
career.

The
roles and responsibilities of a talent manager vary slightly from
industry to industry, as do the commissions to which the manager is
entitled. For example, a music manager's duties differ from those
managers who advise actors, writers, or directors.
A manager can also help artists find an agent, or help them decide when
to leave their current agent and identify who to select as a new agent.
Talent agents
have the authority to make deals for their clients while managers
usually can only informally establish connections with producers and
studios but do not have the ability to negotiate contracts.

A music manager (or band manager) may handle career areas for bands and singers and DJs.

A music manager may be hired by a musician or band, or the manager
may discover the band, and the relationship is usually contractually
bound with mutual assurances, warranties, performances guarantees, and
so forth. The manager's main job is to help with determining decisions
related to career moves, bookings, promotion, business deals, recording
contracts, etc. The role of music managers can be extensive and may
include similar duties to that of a press agent, promoter, booking
agent, business manager (who are usually certified public accountants), tour manager, and sometimes even a personal assistant.
Manager's contracts, however, cannot license those responsibilities
unto the manager in the same way a state license would empower the agent
to do so.

Therefore, conflicting areas of interest may arise unless
those are clarified in the contract. That said, a manager should be able
to read and understand and explain a contracts
and study up on the long-term implications of contractual agreements
that they, the bands, and the people they do business with, enter into.

Before
the manager enters into a
with the band, their relationship may be regarded as competing for
interest; after a good contract is signed, their interests, obligations
and incentives are aligned, and the interest in success is shared. Above
is more information about the ''Entertaiment & Music'' industry to
help and inform people.

Band members as managers:

Sometimes an experienced band member will serve as the group's music manager until it becomes more established and a dedicated manager can be hired. Some local music
managers could be considered musical agents as well, since they
primarily represent the band during the booking process and receive a
fixed percentage of the band's gross income as compensation. A music manager
working for a local or regional band may also have to supervise the
group during a performance and make sure the venue owners meet their
financial obligations.

rite your post here.

Multiple managers:

As a solo performer or band becomes more established, some of the chores previously handled by a music manager are often delegated to others. A road manager, for example, may be responsible for the performers' travel and lodging arrangement, while a publicist takes on the task of promoting the band and advertising upcoming gigs or tour schedules. A manager's role in a popular regional or national band may be more of a liaison between a record label and the group, or as an immediate supervisor who addresses the personal and professional needs of the band.

Characteristics of a good manager:

An effective music manager should have experience in both the creative and business side of the music
industry. Musicians often respond better to managers who speak their
language, while record labels and venue owners prefer to work with
people who are familiar with performance contracts and other legal
obligations. Music managers should not
make unilateral decisions for their clients, but should also keep a
client's best interests in mind when negotiating an appearance fee or
booking more gigs.

Manager training

Training for a music manager
is often a combination of on-the-job experience working for established
managers and specific business training in musical management. Some
traditional music programs in public colleges and universities may offer a concentration in , while vocational schools specifically geared towards the music industry often offer an intensive course of study leading to employment as a freelance music manager.
